Jules Verne Voyages
This animation started out (much like the last one) as practice with After Effects. I learned about a function in the program that lets you link several items and revolve them in unison with each other. At the time I was reading some of Jules Verne's classic travel adventures, and thought it would be fun to put them into an animation!

The figures and backgrounds were created in Illustrator and imported into After Effects.
I had a lot of trouble getting Nemo's face to show up in the window, as shown below.

I wanted to use a mask, but I found out that you can't mask 3D elements in After Effects (all of the elements were 3D). I got around it by just making a miniature head, and sticking it behind the window.
The squid was another issue. I couldn't for the life of me find out how to change the color of that thing. Eventually, I chose a simple solution: make a duplicate squid with the secondary color, overlay it on top of the first, and just manipulate the opacity of the duplicate! And I think it worked!

I think at a certain point the way you learn how to play the piano is just by playing it. And that goes double for After Effects, and most of the Adobe Suite: if you want to learn it, get in there and mess around with some of the tools! And it might turn into a full blown project, like this one did!
